Compare and Contrasting Beowulf

Although they are many differences and similarities in the epic of Beowulf. Its quiet easy to spot out both. Its usual that when a book is made into a movie it will change a bit. That’s why most people prefer to read the book. That way it is more a like to the actual story then a movie. Sometimes it is hard to interpret the story seeing and reading it at two different angles. That’s why we are compare and contrasts likeness and differences.

A few likenesses and differences of this story. In the movie Grendel attacks Heorot before anyone even fell asleep. Now in the book it says that Grendel snatched up 30 men out of there sleep. In the movie the reason why Grendel goes to Heorot is because the loud noise irritates him. Although in the text it states that he wanted to see why everything got so quiet. Watching the movie Grendel took off Grendel’s arm with the door and lied about it. While the book says that Beowulf just ripped off Grendel’s arm with his bare hands.

Some of the major differences. Well one of the major differences is that when Beowulf went to see Grendel’s mother, he did not kill her. Beowulf also could not cut her. She just touched the sword and just like that it started to melt. Another big difference in this story is that Beowulf also made a deal with Grendel’s mom to become king. The only thing Beowulf had to do was give her a son and he did. So sense Beowulf became king of Denmark his queen is Weathow.

Some of the most clear similarities. Beowulf did kill Grendel just slightly in a different manner. Beowulf did go to the moors to look for Grendel’s mother. He also was accompanied by Wiglaf. The thing is that he got sidetracked when she tried to seduce him. Beowulf last test to show that he was still an epic hero. He had to slay the dragon that was terrorizing the land.

These are some of the main ideas on this paper, between the movie and text. It really boils down to the fact if you like to read or watch a movie. Or based on how much time you have. You should also consider that people can easily misinterpret what they read. Its what ever you prefer. This concludes this comparison and contrast essay.

  1. AJ this is pretty good but let me know if the scenes you are describing are from the text or the film.
